Appletree Books, an independent bookstore established in 1975, offers an eclectic, well-curated selection of new book titles in multiple genres for both children and adults. The store is located in the Cedar Fairmount neighborhood at 12419 Cedar Road in the historic Heights Center building, up the hill from Cleveland’s University Circle. We are proud to be celebrating over 40 years in our original location.
We seek to offer books that transport readers to other places, both visually and verbally and aim to introduce beautifully illustrated and interesting books to our customers.
We feature greeting cards, journals, letterpress cards and notecards in addition to puzzles, bookends, candles, and small gift items in an intimate, warm space in the historic Heights Center building.
We are pleased to carry the following from local and national designers:
Hazelmade: notecards, greeting cards and tea towels
Furbish & Fire: candles
oddball press: greeting cards
Ornament Letterpress: letterpress notecards and flat cards
Piccolino Designs: notecards, postcards and bookmarks
Rose Iron Works: notecards
Eric Silverman: photo cards of Cleveland and Cleveland Heights

Sound familiar? It’s the easiest way to remember the spring time change when Daylight Savings Time comes around.
“Spring Forward” is also appropriate for Appletree right now as we prepare to open the WHOLE store (yes, the entire space!) for browsing on Tuesday, March 23rd. A little “forward” thinking was in order for the fiction section, and fiction readers, we hope, will be pleased with the changes that we have made to facilitate browsing and discovering great “stories.” The “old” side of the store is dedicated to fiction, including poetry, mysteries, classics, and a variety of genres such as “Rom Com” (Romantic Comedy), “Interesting International Voices,” “Historical Fiction,” “Science Fiction/Fantasy” and “Y/A (young adult) Crossover.” The mystery section has been expanded to include true crime, as well as classic crime.
The stationery area returns with some changes as well, most notably, an area showcasing local paper product designers and small gift items that are creatively presented and packaged.
While social distancing, masks, hand sanitizer, and people limitations are still in place, all of us at Appletree are excited that we are able to make “more” available to our customers while being mindful that although Covid is still very much with us, we see a way “forward” toward fewer restrictions.
